Origin and Development

1902

In our state statistics department was originated as a 3 member unit in Board of Revenue for collecting and compiling agriculture statistics, retail price and seasonal report.

1922- June

This unit was then transferred to Directorate of Agricultureoffice with 4 officials

1932

Shifted back to land revenue division in Board of revenue.

Statistical Officer Post was created.

1936

This statistical unit was brought under the control of industrial Directorate in Board of Revenue

1942-August

During the Second world war, in order to collect data on the production of essential commodities, transport , prices and , demand in food grains, this unit was shifted to public distribution department in Board of revenue

1948

This Statistical unit was headed by Economic Advisor in the cadre of joint secretary to Government.

This Statistical unit was started working as an independent unit in Board of revenue with Thiru. N. K. Athyandaya as first director

1953

Evolved into a independent department under the name Department of Statistics

First district office was created in then South Arcot District.

1964-65

Taluk level offices were created

1980-81

Regional level offices and Block level were created

1988

In July 1988, this department was brought under the Administrative control of Planning and Development Department

Renamed as Department of Economics and Statistics

Department was restructured

Functions

  • This department is the sole authority of Agricultural statistics in the state
    • SASA- State Agricultural Statistics Authority
  • Plays a pivotal role in collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of various types of socio-economic data for planning & policy decisions.
  • This department is also functioning as “Nodal Agency” for the matters relating to economic statistics of the State Government.
  • Works in co-ordination with the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO), and Central Statistical Organization, Government of India for certain studies.
  • Organizes adhoc studies depending on the requirements of the Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India
